2011 Slidell, LA

The Project: In May 2011 a group of volunteers will travel to Slidell, LA, to aid local people in rebuilding and repairing their homes. We need people with building skills: carpentry, drywall, roofing, electrical and plumbing, etc. The team also needs cooks and food buyers, drivers, and people with willing hands, minds and spirits to help with a variety of support and construction needs. Work team leaders will be selected from among participants.

Dates and Location: Sunday, May 1 – Saturday, May 14, 2011. We expect twenty volunteers each week; volunteers are invited to come for one week or both weeks. We will be staying at the Epworth Project in Slidell, about 30 miles northeast of New Orleans. The Epworth Project is a disaster relief center sponsored by the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. The Epworth Project is located at 360 Robert Blvd., Slidell, LA 70458. Phone: 985 781-7990. You will find photos and more information at www.epworthproject.com. Please do not apply through their website; we have applied to go as a group. Your application form is below.

Leadership: The leader for this trip is the Rev. Lawrence R. Bergstresser, a semi-retired United Methodist pastor. Pastor Larry has led many mission trips to the Appalachian Mountain area of Kentucky as well as five Katrina Recovery Mission trips to Mississippi and New Orleans. You may contact him at 610 324-7584 or lrbergst@aol.com.

Estimated Costs: The cost per person per week for this trip is $400 plus transportation. The $400 fee includes three meals a day, a contribution to the Epworth Project to help pay for the cost of utilities and staff, insurance, transportation to the work site and a T-shirt. It does not include transportation to Slidell. You will need to decide whether to drive or fly to New Orleans. We will help to arrange car pools and coordinate flight plans. Team members will also want to attempt to raise funds for building materials; we are suggesting a goal of $100 per person.

Driving to Slidell: It is about 1210 miles to Slidell from the Philadelphia area. Expect to pay at least $400 for gasoline per vehicle round trip. The team will need several vehicles to provide transportation for team members to the work sites. We will need to buy supplies at local stores. Several pick-up trucks or vans would be especially useful!

Flying to New Orleans: Roundtrip flights from Philadelphia to the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport cost $277-300 and up at this time. We will arrange to pick you up at the New Orleans Airport if we know your flight information.

How You Can Support This Mission Trip: First, pray for this project. Then, register on the enclosed sheets. If you cannot go, pass this information on to someone else who you think God might call to do this work. Contribute what you can to support others.
